19 AUG 08 - 2009 SkillsUSA Theme Announced

The theme for SkillsUSA 2008-2009 competition is SkillsUSA: Champions at Work Leadership in Transition. This theme will be used for the Prepared Speech, Promotional Bulletin Board, and Chapter Display Contest. You can find more information at the National SkillsUSA website.

2 Jul 08 - WV Skills USA brings home Medals from National Leadership Skills Conference

The delegation from West Virginia Skills USA attended the National Leadership Skills Conference in Kansas City M. O. The delegation consisted of 76 students from all over the state. We were able to win fourteen medals in six different contest and also had many winners in the top twenty. Obtaining the gold medal for State Pin Design was Cinday Derreberry from Putnam County.  The Promotional Bulletin Board Team from Mercer County Tech Center consisting of Fritz Zacher and Nick Stevenson obtained a silver medal. The following students obtained bronze in their respective competitions: Carl Duffield - Plumbing, Job Demo O - Whitney Hull, Mariea Vance, Jonah Coleman, and Aaron Bartoe - Chapter Display, and Raymond Ford, Andy Hefner, Alex Jonese, Seth Mitchell Jarius Morton, and Cecil Rappold - Chapter Business Procedure. Congratulation goes out to all students and advisors that attended the conference.

15 MAY 08 - New State Director Appointed

Hello everyone, My name is Bob Wilson and I am the new State Director of Skills USA for West Virginia. I have been involved in Skills USA for the last seven years as an advisor at the John D. Rockefeller Career Center in Hancock County, where I was also the Welding Technology Instructor. I will be attending the NLSC this summer in Kansas City and look forward to meeting everybody.  Mr. James and I have been working on registrations and bus schedules and hope to have all of the scheduling done by the end of this week. 2009 SLSC Announced
The 2009 State Leadership and Skills Conference will be held on March 27-28 at the Academy of Careers and Technology in Beckley, WV.

State Conference Results

State Conference Thanks
A heartfelt thank-you to all the contestants, advisors, contest chairpersons, and judges that made the 2008 State Leadership and Skills Conference a rousing success. Thanks are also due to the staff, faculty, administration, and student volunteers at Ben Franklin Career Center and Carver Career Center for all your hard work. Finally, a special nod of appreciation to John Williams at Ben Franklin for organizing the event. You made me look good!!

Today's Students, Tomorrow's Leaders
Read this article in the January issue of ACTE's Techniques magazine about how CTSOs are providing students with the technical and leadership skills needed to succeed in the workplace.

SLSC Date Announced
The State Leadership and Skills Conference will be held on April 11-12, 2008 at Ben Franklin Career Center in Dunbar, WV. Begin making plans by reviewing the tentative conference agenda.

SLSC Contest Changes
One new contest has been added and several contests have changed for the 2008 State Leadership and Skills Conference. Web Design has been added to the slate. It is a team competition designed to "evaluate each contestant’s preparation for employment and to recognize outstanding students for excellence and professionalism in the field of web design." The contest is open to all active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs utilizing Web Design as an occupational objective.

In addition, State Pin Design has been elevated to a medalled event and changes have been made to the Job Skill Demonstrations contests. The state t-shirt and program cover design competitions have been dropped. For additional information, refer to the 2008 Skills USA Championships Technical Standards to be released in October.

Leadership Forum Offered
Trying to kick off the new Skills USA year with a bang? Consider offering the Student Leadership Forum at your school. The forum is a 5-hour introduction to the student-led organization. Students and advisors explore the traditions of Skills USA as they participate in a variety of team building exercises and begin to construct a Program of Work. Please contact the office if you are interested in hosting a Leadership Forum at your school.

WV Students Compete at Nationals
Approximately 100 students and advisors from West Virginia attended the National Leadership and Skills Conference in Kansas City, MO on June 25 - 29, 2007. This year's NLSC was the biggest yet, with more than 5,000 contestants in 87 contests. West Virginia came away with one medal and 26 students who finished in the top 10 of their contests. Congratulations to Lucy Swecker from Randolph Technical Center who won a gold medal in Prepared Speech. View the complete results here.
